Leaders of the Maximo Utility Working Group accepting their 2010 Premier UG Award
Formed in Brussels back in 1969, Doctor Downtrip were to debut with a single for the Vogue label. In june 1970 they played the Puzzle P-festival(a famous Brussels club in the Rue De Bouchers) with many Belgian hardrock bands as well as headliner Wallace Collection. But the first highlight of their relatively brief career was their appearance at the Bilzen Rock & Jazz festival in august 1970 along such acts as Badfinger and Screaming Lord Sutch. Both festivals also had another Brussels band, Burning Plague on the bill. When by the end of 1970 Plagues Michael Heslop (who was original from the USA) decided to put his band on hold, the announcement of his entry to Doctor Downtrip quickly followed. After a while this new line-up (John Hastry on bass, Michael Heslop on guitar, Paul Van De Velden on drums, Michel Rorive on vocals and Sylvain Paul on organ) was really rocking as proven on the summer festival Den Haan and the fondly-remembered Jemelle festival on august 8th,1971 where they supported Golden Earring and Genesis. It took more than a year before the new five-piece had an impressive armoury of self-penned compositions at their disposal, and the first proof of it, came in 1972 when they released the single take my place backed with depressed on CBS records. Both songs showed the real potential of this hardrock band as their fine organ/guitar work was finally captured on vinyl. Shepley Metcalf sings "It's Cool To Be Cool" by Fran Landesman and Simon Wallace at Acton Jazz Cafe in January 2010. Ron Roy on piano and Chris Rathbun on bass. This tune is one of fifteen Landesman/Wallace songs on Boston-based singer Shepley Metcalf's new CD "Something Irresistible: Songs of Fran Landesman + Simon Wallace" (April 2010 release). Impressed with the lyrics of the 1955 jazz standard "Spring Can Really Hang You Up The Most," Shepley researched its lyricist Fran Landesman and found that Fran is living in London, working with composer/pianist Simon Wallace, and is still writing witty, poignant, and sophisticated songs. Shepley and her musical partner, arranger/pianist Ron Roy, selected their favorite tunes from this new songbook, and recorded them with bassist Chris Rathbun and drummer Gene Roma. Hi friends I love British comedy and Ian Wallace fits the bill here. This is from his "The Wallace Collection" of Human Portraits from 1957 on EP 45rpm. Ian Bryce Wallace OBE (10 July 1919 12 October 2009) was a British bass-baritone opera and concert singer, actor and broadcaster of Scottish extraction. His family intended him for a career in the law, but he was attracted to the stage. Originally an actor in non-musical plays, he was persuaded to try opera and made an immediate success. He played a range of buffo parts in operas, at Glyndebourne and internationally. Wallace maintained a simultaneous career in revue, straight theatre, and broadcasting. He appeared in pantomime and at the Royal Variety Performance. As a broadcaster, he was a long-time panellist on the BBC radio panel game My Music, and he presented a television series of introductions to operas in the 1960s, as well as appearing in light entertainment shows singing a range of songs from ballads to comedy numbers. He performed his one-man show for many years. Flanders and Swann wrote several songs for him, and their best-known song, "The Hippopotamus", became indelibly associated with him. Enjoy.
