what should i wear to karate?

*Ashie* asked:

this sounds like a typical Girl question but i'm starting a karate class tomo with my partner. we get our karate gi's in the 10th lesson, so as an ex-dancer who only really has yoga and dance trousers im thinking that perhaps i should be opting for looser clothing this time?

ideas?

There is much stretching and moving in karate just like in yoga. So my advice is yea, wear something that will allow room for a lot of leg movement an running around.

think like your in high school what would you have worn to p.e. take your shoes off and that's what you wear.

A leotard top covered by a t-shirt and some kind of lose type pants; sweats work great if they are not to tight and so your dance trousers could work nicely if they are the lose, baggy kind. You are correct in that you want your clothing lose somewhat but also remember some of the positions and stretches can be a little unflattering and immodest if it does not cover appropriate areas adequately so keep that in mind and you should be good to go until you get your gi. Even with a gi many of my female students always wear a t-shirt under their gi top or a leotard top for this reason.

Nothing special except bare feet! When you start karate you will need to wear loose clothing so that you are able to move around freely. Suitable clothing would consist of jogging/ tracksuit trousers, and a T-shirt. It is important that whatever you choose to wear is both comfortable and suitable for physical activity. It's best not to wear jewellery either.

When you are confident that you want to continue with karate training you can purchase yourself a ‘gi’, which is the cotton jacket and trousers worn in karate. (Say ‘G’ as in ‘Game’ and ‘ee’ as in ‘Bee’).

Dance or yoga wear is perfect but I would not wear anything with stirrups. You need to have good traction on the floor with bare feet. I typically wear UnderArmor (pants and shirt) under my gi and would wear the same with a pair of shorts and possibly a tshirt over top.

Don't wear anything too loose or covers your ankles and wrists because you don't want to get your hands or feet stuck in your clothing while moving. It sounds silly, but I've seen it happen and it can get your a minor sprain.

Congratulations on starting your journey in the martial arts.

Where something you can move around easy on. When I started karate and my gi didn't come in yet i remember going to the classes with trackies and a singlet. good luck

loose fitting clothing, sweet pants are good and a t-shirt, something comfortable.
you will be doing basics (kicking, punching blocks) for the first few class

when you first start, you will be asked to arrive in a T Shirt and tracksuit bottoms, then after you first lesson you will be asked to by a uniforn known as a "GI".

You have made the right decision. Good Luck! oosar!.

Just wear some sweat pants and a t-shirt. Don't go trying to look good. just be comfortable. If you don't have a pair of sweats, go buy some. Really… don't wear dance cloths or anything tight or revealing. You'll loose a lot of respect in the class.

nased_acejo @ 11:34 pm

Basically, you have to wear something that suits you. You can move comfortably and sway gracefully. Something that really fits the action.

But aside from all of it, karate is an activity full of action and styles. One should wear a disciplined mind, heart and body. It doesn't really matter what you really wear physically but what you wear emotionally and mentally.

Doing things with bare hands is not an easy way to do but something you can do perfectly through proper training, self-control and discipline.

i'm going with what most of the people here are saying. Go with something like jogging bottoms for the lower body.

Upper body wear something to keep yourself in… why does that sound dirty in my mind… anyway

atop that wear a looser t-shirt or something. Perhaps one of those sports tops a lot of girls i see down the gym wear with the t-shirt over the top.

When you get your gi you'll probably want to continue with the top / undertop combination beneath it.

Sweat pants and heavy T-shirt. Invest in a cup and a sports bra. You may eventually need them and they are inexpensive. Yes the make groin protection for women.
You are correct that looser clothing is in order for Karate class.

A gi. Don't wear high heels. It will scare the instructor.
